About

Yongxiang Hu is a leading figure in ocean color remote sensing and aerosol science, whose work directly supports NASA’s Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission. His research focuses on solving one of climate science’s most persistent challenges: accurately separating the signals of atmospheric aerosols from the water-leaving radiance that reveals ocean biology. Hu’s major contributions include the development of joint retrieval algorithms that invert multi-angle polarimetric measurements to simultaneously derive aerosol properties and water-leaving radiance, a breakthrough for atmospheric correction over complex coastal waters. He also advanced the understanding of sea spray aerosols, a key but uncertain component of the aerosol–radiation–climate problem. His most cited work, a 2013 review of sea spray aerosol production and optical properties (60 citations), remains a foundational reference. Hu’s algorithms have been validated through airborne campaigns like ACEPOL and are critical to the success of the PACE mission’s hyperspectral radiometer and polarimeters.
