About
Yonghua Zhang’s research sits at the intersection of agricultural robotics and bio-inspired underwater propulsion, with a focus on developing intelligent systems that mimic nature. In agricultural robotics, Zhang created a pioneering blueberry ripeness detection algorithm for picking robots (2023, 34 citations), addressing the critical shortage of skilled harvesters by enabling automated, vision-based identification of ripe fruit. This work directly supports the growing demand for precision agriculture in high-value crops. Zhang’s most extensive contributions, however, lie in biomimetic underwater robotics. Through a series of studies on the bluespotted ray, Zhang has systematically investigated finned propulsors, from parametric analyses (2012, 31 citations) to the development and motion testing of a complete robotic ray (2015, 11 citations). This work includes numerical and experimental research on modular oscillating fins (2008, 15 citations) and the design of a multiple shape-memory-alloy-driven fin for a bionic underwater vehicle (2018, 6 citations). By measuring morphology, kinematics, and propulsion performance, Zhang has provided foundational data for improving stability and maneuverability in bio-inspired underwater vehicles.
