About
Xiaobing Sun is a prominent remote sensing scientist whose research centers on atmospheric correction, aerosol retrieval, and polarimetric remote sensing—fields critical to extracting reliable environmental information from satellite imagery. His work has made significant contributions to characterizing aerosol optical properties and atmospheric parameters, particularly over China's diverse land surfaces, advancing the accuracy of quantitative remote sensing applications. Sun has played a key role in developing and validating instruments aboard China's high-profile satellite missions, including the Gao Fen Duo Mo (GFDM) and HJ-2 A/B constellations, demonstrating on-orbit performance of polarimetric atmospheric correctors that retrieve aerosol optical depth and column water vapor with improved precision. His retrieval algorithm innovations—ranging from adaptive land-atmospheric decoupling to optimal estimation frameworks—have addressed longstanding challenges in separating surface and atmospheric signals in polarized remote sensing data. His characterization of primary aerosol models across China using AERONET data provides foundational knowledge for radiative transfer modeling throughout the region. Collectively, his publications have accumulated nearly 100 citations, reflecting growing recognition across the atmospheric and remote sensing communities. Through instrumental validation, algorithmic development, and aerosol climatology, Sun's research strengthens China's independent capacity for Earth observation and environmental monitoring.
