About
Wencheng Zhu is a leading materials scientist whose research sits at the intersection of bioinspired hydrogels, flexible electronics, and smart actuators. Zhu’s most celebrated contribution is the development of a bioinspired mineral hydrogel that functions as a self-healable, mechanically adaptable ionic skin for highly sensitive pressure sensing. This work, published in 2017, has garnered over 1,000 citations, reflecting its profound impact on the fields of artificial intelligence, wearable devices, and soft robotics. By mimicking the unique combination of properties found in human skin, Zhu’s hydrogel opened new avenues for creating durable, responsive electronic skins. In parallel, Zhu has advanced the field of anisotropic actuators with a pioneering study on MoS₂-based dual-responsive flexible actuators.
