About
Stefan Fuchs is a robotics researcher whose work bridges advanced sensing technologies and intelligent autonomous systems. His research spans two deeply interconnected areas: time-of-flight (ToF) camera technology and mobile manipulation robotics, with significant contributions to human-robot collaboration. Fuchs made foundational contributions to ToF camera applications in robotics, addressing critical challenges in calibration, 3D mapping, and multipath interference compensation — a systematic error that can distort depth measurements by several centimeters. His work on mitigating these artifacts (collectively accumulating over 300 citations) proved essential for reliable robotic perception in manipulation and navigation tasks. His 2009 paper on 3D mapping using ToF cameras in SLAM applications (120 citations) helped establish these sensors as viable tools for autonomous mobile robots. In parallel, Fuchs contributed to the development of "Rollin' Justin" (156 citations), a landmark mobile humanoid platform designed for dexterous servicing tasks, and explored the concept of robotic co-workers in human-centered environments (117 citations). His later research extended into shared autonomy, using gaze-based intention estimation to enable seamless human-robot collaboration in teleoperation. Across his career, Fuchs has consistently worked toward robots that perceive their environments accurately and cooperate intelligently alongside humans.
