Siqian Li is pioneering the frontier of soft robotics with a focus on creating ultra-thin, agile machines designed to navigate the most challenging confined environments. Her research centers on multimodal locomotion and the innovative integration of soft and rigid materials, addressing critical needs in infrastructure inspection—from power plants to bridges. Li’s most impactful work, a 2024 study on multimodal locomotion ultra-thin soft robots (60 citations), demonstrates how these devices can traverse complex, narrow spaces that are inaccessible to traditional robots, preventing costly functional failures. More recently, her 2025 paper introduces a fast-moving thin soft-rigid hybrid robot driven by an in-plane dielectric elastomer actuator, overcoming fabrication limitations of existing DEAs to achieve unprecedented speed and miniaturization.
