About
Dr. Shili Gai is pioneering the intersection of bio-inspired soft robotics and intelligent materials for extreme environment applications. Her research focuses on developing multifunctional soft actuators and hydrogels that integrate machine learning, fluorescence, and environmental resilience. In her highly cited 2024 work, inspired by the water lily, Gai introduced a light/thermal cascaded-driven soft actuator for machine recognition, demonstrating how biomimicry can yield advanced, responsive devices. This paper has garnered 20 citations, signaling strong early impact. Her most recent 2025 breakthrough presents a machine learning-enabled, fluorescent, anti-freezing core–shell hydrogel designed for deep-sea Morse code communication in human-machine interaction. This work addresses a critical gap: creating flexible, conductive materials that remain robust under freezing and swelling conditions. By engineering a core–shell architecture, Gai’s hydrogel achieves unprecedented environmental tolerance, opening new possibilities for underwater intelligent systems. Her achievements represent a significant leap in soft robotics and smart materials, merging biological inspiration with computational intelligence to solve real-world challenges in extreme environments.
