About
Shidai Tian is pioneering the frontiers of soft robotics and neuromorphic optoelectronics, engineering intelligent materials that blur the line between sensing, actuation, and computation. In soft robotics, Tian introduced a groundbreaking polymeric bilayer multi-legged millirobot that integrates dual actuation (light and magnetism) with humidity sensing in a single, wirelessly controlled platform. This work, published in 2021, addresses a critical gap in the field—coupling multiple driving modes to enhance robotic mobility—and has already garnered 8 citations for its innovative design. On the neuromorphic front, Tian’s 2025 paper presents an asymmetric ferroelectric gated reconfigurable WSe₂ p–n homojunction, a device that enables in-sensor neuromorphic vision processing. By achieving reconfigurable optoelectronic responses in a simple homojunction architecture, this work offers a path toward energy-efficient, real-time artificial vision systems, earning 7 citations in a rapidly evolving field. Tian’s research uniquely bridges soft matter engineering and advanced semiconductor devices, demonstrating a rare versatility that promises to inspire next-generation adaptive systems for robotics and intelligent sensing.
