About

Shangsheng Zhang is a rising innovator in soft robotics, focusing on the intersection of fluid-driven and smart material-driven actuation for compliant, adaptable machines. His work addresses a central challenge in the field: enabling soft robots to bear heavy loads without sacrificing flexibility. In his 2023 paper on fluid-driven and smart material-driven research for soft body robots—which has garnered 17 citations—Zhang synthesized key design principles for next-generation soft systems. His most notable contribution, however, comes from his 2024 study on the "Design of Heavy-Load Soft Robots Based on a Dual Biomimetic Structure." Here, Zhang drew inspiration from both plant cell walls and honeycomb structures, creating a flexible shell that achieves significant deformation while withstanding substantial loads. By staggering the bonding of these biomimetic layers, he demonstrated a novel strategy for overcoming the traditional trade-off between compliance and strength. Though early in his career, Zhang’s dual-biomimetic approach points toward a new class of robust, lightweight soft robots capable of industrial and rescue applications, marking him as a researcher to watch in the evolution of bio-inspired engineering.
