About
Sanghee Nam is a materials scientist and robotics engineer whose research sits at the intersection of advanced nanomaterials and soft robotics, with a particular focus on electroactive artificial muscles and stimuli-responsive actuators. Nam has made significant contributions to the development of MXene-based actuator systems, most notably demonstrating that ionically cross-linked Ti₃C₂Tₓ electrodes can achieve ultrafast bending responses within one second, exceptional cyclic stability exceeding 18,000 cycles, and large bending strains at remarkably low voltages — work that has garnered over 238 citations. Expanding this foundation, Nam co-authored an influential review on stimuli-responsive MXene actuators (207 citations) that has become a key reference in the field. Beyond MXene, Nam has pioneered electrode materials derived from covalent organic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks, and covalent triazine frameworks, broadening the toolkit available for next-generation soft robotics. Notable applied work includes a bioinspired soft actuator capable of playing an electronic piano and a nitinol-nanowire hybrid artificial muscle enabling prosthetic hand applications. With a cumulative citation record reflecting substantial field-wide influence, Nam's research continues shaping the future of intelligent, responsive robotic systems.
