About

S. Messina is an astrophysicist whose research spans two fascinating domains: the high-energy physics of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and the magnetic activity of variable stars. Perhaps best known for contributions to the development of the REM (Rapid Eye Mount) telescope — a pioneering robotic, multi-frequency facility installed at La Silla Observatory in Chile — Messina helped create an instrument capable of simultaneously capturing visible and near-infrared wavelengths (0.45–2.3 microns) with rapid-response pointing, enabling real-time observation of GRB afterglows, including high-redshift events otherwise obscured by Lyman-alpha absorption. Equally significant is Messina's systematic study of magnetically active stars, particularly RS CVn binary systems.
