Roland Bulirsch is a towering figure in numerical mathematics and optimal control, best known for the seminal Bulirsch-Stoer algorithm for ordinary differential equations and his foundational contributions to the numerical treatment of optimization problems. Bulirsch made groundbreaking contributions to the development of direct and indirect methods for solving optimal control problems, particularly for systems with both continuous and discrete dynamics.
