About

Rifat Sipahi is a leading researcher in the dynamics and control of multi-agent robotic systems, with a particular focus on the destabilizing effects of time delays in communication and actuation. His work bridges theoretical stability analysis with real-world experimental validation, most notably in his highly cited 2015 paper on consensus control for a three-robot system, which has garnered 60 citations. In this landmark study, Sipahi designed and implemented a consensus protocol using camera-based tracking and Bluetooth communication, demonstrating how delays can be managed in practice. He has since advanced the field by analyzing consensus stability in large-scale networks of differential-wheeled robots under both input and transmission delays (2021, 13 citations), and by revealing a self-regulating mechanism in which delay-induced instability can be mitigated through agent regrouping (2016, 11 citations). His more recent work on predictor-based stabilization (2020) provides controller gain design strategies for achieving fast consensus despite measurement delays. Beyond robotics, Sipahi has contributed to biomedical signal processing, developing a combined time-frequency technique for accurate extraction of heart rate variability metrics. His research is essential reading for anyone studying the intersection of control theory, networked systems, and delay compensation.
