Raymond Austin Jarvis is a robotics researcher whose work spans autonomous navigation, covert path planning, computer vision, and surveillance systems. He is perhaps best known for his pioneering contributions to covert robotics — developing algorithms that enable mobile robots to navigate unknown environments while remaining hidden from designated sentry points. His 2004 paper on covert path planning in unknown environments, along with companion work on distance transform-based visibility measures, established foundational techniques for stealth-aware robot navigation that continue to influence the field. Jarvis has also made significant contributions to robot perception and situational awareness. His work on anomaly detection for patrolling robots demonstrated how panoramic vision systems could enable robots to identify environmental changes along a trained route — a capability with clear applications in security and monitoring. Further research explored collaborative surveillance, fusing data from overhead cameras and mobile platforms, as well as robust pose estimation using panoramic vision in cluttered indoor environments. Beyond navigation and surveillance, Jarvis contributed to assistive robotics through stereo vision-based object grasping using SIFT recognition, and to maritime robotics through horizon detection techniques.
