About

R. Lopes de Oliveira is a leading figure in optical time-domain astronomy and wide-field photometric surveys, with a focus on the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational-wave sources and the characterization of galaxies in the local Universe. As a key member of the TOROS Collaboration, Lopes de Oliveira contributed to the first-ever optical detection of an electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational-wave event (GW170817), a landmark achievement published in 2017 that has garnered 139 citations. This work demonstrated the power of rapid, robotic follow-up observations in multi-messenger astronomy. More recently, Lopes de Oliveira has been instrumental in the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), a pioneering project imaging ~9300 square degrees of the southern sky through 12 optical filters. Their contributions to the survey’s first data release (2019, 197 citations) and the fourth data release (2024) have provided the community with unprecedented photometric redshifts, spectral energy distributions, and morphologies for millions of galaxies.
