About
A. Kanaan is a leading figure in optical time-domain astronomy and wide-field photometric surveys, playing a pivotal role in the discovery and characterization of the first electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational-wave source. As a key member of the TOROS Collaboration, Kanaan contributed to the prompt optical follow-up of GW170817, a landmark paper with 139 citations that documented the rapidly dimming light curves of a neutron star merger. Kanaan is also a driving force behind the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), a major project imaging ~9,300 square degrees of the southern sky through a unique set of 12 optical filters—seven narrow and five broadband. The survey’s foundational paper (2019, 197 citations) and its fourth data release (2024, 16 citations) have provided the community with unprecedented photometric redshifts, improved spectral energy distributions, and detailed morphologies for millions of galaxies. By bridging the gap between gravitational-wave astrophysics and deep, multi-band optical surveys, Kanaan has enabled transformative studies of transient phenomena and the local universe, cementing their reputation as a builder of critical astronomical infrastructure.
