Phil Hontalas is a pioneering researcher in the field of human-robot interaction and teleoperation, with a particular focus on virtual reality interfaces for remote robotic exploration. Working out of NASA Ames Research Center's Intelligent Mechanisms Group, Hontalas made significant contributions to the challenge of operating robotic systems in hazardous and distant environments during the mid-1990s, a formative era for planetary exploration technology.
