About

Kishalay De is a leading figure in time-domain astrophysics, specializing in the discovery and characterization of transient cosmic events. His work is centered on building and deploying cutting-edge robotic observatories to capture the dynamic universe, from supernovae to the elusive kilonovae produced by neutron star mergers. De was instrumental in establishing the GROWTH-India Telescope (GIT), a 70 cm robotic facility that serves as India’s first dedicated eye for time-domain studies, enabling rapid follow-up of transient phenomena. More recently, he has led the commissioning of the Wide-Field Infrared Transient Explorer (WINTER) at Palomar Observatory, a pioneering near-infrared survey instrument designed to detect and characterize kilonovae—the electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave events.
