Johanna Hansen’s research lies at the intersection of marine robotics and environmental monitoring, where she develops autonomous systems to tackle complex underwater sampling challenges. Her most impactful work focuses on enabling heterogeneous teams of robots—combining autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) with underwater platforms—to collaboratively collect data in dynamic marine environments. In her highly cited 2017 paper, "Data Correlation and Comparison from Multiple Sensors Over a Coral Reef with a Team of Heterogeneous Aquatic Robots" (14 citations), she demonstrated how multi-robot coordination can reveal spatial patterns in coral reef ecosystems.
