About
Jaan Rebane is a robotics researcher whose work sits at the exciting intersection of bio-inspired design, marine exploration, and adaptive control. His most significant contribution is the development of the U-CAT, a biomimetic underwater robot designed to penetrate shipwrecks. Inspired by sea turtles, this autonomous, small, and low-cost vehicle was created to assist archaeologists, replacing dangerous and expensive human-led dives. This foundational work, published in 2014, has garnered 35 citations and established Rebane’s reputation in the field. More recently, Rebane has pushed the boundaries of robot autonomy by integrating Bayesian optimization with Sliding Mode Control. This novel methodology, validated in a 2024 study, allows a bio-inspired marine robot to self-improve its control in real-time, using minimal prior knowledge of its dynamics.
