About

Hsieh-Yu Li is a leading researcher in physical human-robot interaction (pHRI), focusing on the critical challenge of enabling robots to work safely and compliantly alongside humans in dynamic, unstructured environments. His major contributions center on developing advanced control schemes—including variable admittance and adaptive control—that allow robotic manipulators to maintain stability and compliance even when interacting with moving environments or objects of unknown stiffness. His most cited work, "Stable and Compliant Motion of Physical Human–Robot Interaction Coupled With a Moving Environment Using Variable Admittance and Adaptive Control" (85 citations), is foundational in this area. Li has also pioneered applications in medical robotics, notably for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) kidney stone surgery, where he developed ultrasound-guided systems for involuntary motion compensation and robotic-assisted access. Extending his impact to manufacturing, he created the "Detect-Remove-Replace" system for unmanned continuous 3D printing. His work on smooth transitions between augmentation and autonomous modes, as well as vision-based robotic picking using deep reinforcement learning, demonstrates a versatile approach to making robots more intuitive and effective partners in both clinical and industrial settings.
