About

Hitoshi Arisumi has made pioneering contributions to humanoid robotics, focusing on whole-body motion control for dynamic manipulation and navigation in human environments. His research addresses fundamental challenges in enabling robots to interact with heavy, constrained objects through innovative motion generation techniques. Arisumi’s most influential work, “Dynamic Lifting Motion of Humanoid Robots” (2007, 56 citations), introduced a method that leverages preliminary whole-body motion to reduce arm actuator loads during lifting, enabling robots to handle objects beyond their static strength. This was extended in “Dynamic lifting by whole body motion of humanoid robots” (2008, 54 citations), which formalized the use of singular arm postures to avoid actuator saturation. His work on door manipulation is particularly notable: “Whole-body motion of a humanoid robot for passing through a door” (2009, 33 citations) pioneered the use of impulsive forces to open spring-loaded doors, while “Visual recognition of a door and its knob for a humanoid robot” (2011, 13 citations) provided an integrated vision-touch solution for autonomous door operation. Arisumi also explored unconventional manipulation, such as casting manipulation with tethered projectiles (2015, 12 citations), and contributed to UAV indoor flight technology (2017). With over 200 total citations, his research has significantly advanced the mobility and dexterity of humanoid robots in real-world environments.
