About

Hilding Elmqvist is a pioneering figure in physical systems modeling, best known as the principal architect of Modelica, the open-standard, object-oriented language for modeling complex, heterogeneous systems. His foundational 2001 paper, "Object-Oriented and Hybrid Modeling in Modelica" (57 citations), established the core semantics that enable engineers to seamlessly integrate mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and control subsystems—a breakthrough that has become essential in robotics, automotive, and aerospace design. Elmqvist’s work extends far beyond language design; he has tackled the theoretical challenges of multi-mode DAE models (2019, 21 citations) and advanced practical co-simulation through an extended FMI 2.0 interface for nonlinear state estimation (2014, 16 citations). Most recently, his Modia project (2021, 11 citations) pushes the envelope by implementing equation-based modeling in Julia, demonstrating how domain-specific algorithms can be elegantly co-designed with a modern language. With a career spanning from the birth of object-oriented modeling to cutting-edge simulation infrastructure, Elmqvist’s contributions have fundamentally shaped how researchers and engineers model the physical world.
