About
Hanyuan Liu is a rising innovator at the intersection of ocean energy harvesting and advanced optical sensing. His research centers on two transformative areas: developing self-powered maritime systems for the Internet of Things, and engineering high-precision fiber-optic sensors. In a landmark 2023 study (30 citations), Liu introduced an omnidirectional water wave-driven triboelectric net-zero power smart ocean network—a pioneering hardware solution that converts ambient wave energy into power for long-distance target detection, offering a sustainable alternative to battery-dependent marine sensors. His work in photonics is equally notable: in 2022022, he demonstrated a femtosecond laser-inscribed off-axis high-order mode long-period grating (SP-LPG) that achieves independent, simultaneous measurement of curvature and temperature. This compact, 2.1 mm sensor with a 30 µm period represents a major step forward for structural health monitoring and environmental sensing.
