About
Hans Utz is a robotics researcher whose work spans mobile robot middleware, autonomous vision systems, and space exploration robotics. He is perhaps best known as a principal architect of Miro, a pioneering middleware framework designed to simplify software development for mobile and autonomous robots. First presented in 2001 and refined through subsequent publications, Miro addressed the significant challenges posed by heterogeneous hardware, operating systems, and communication protocols in distributed robotic systems — work that has accumulated over 400 citations across related publications and established Utz as a foundational contributor to robotic software infrastructure.
