Filipe Ferreira is a leading researcher in marine robotics and behavioural ecology, with a focus on developing and deploying unmanned systems for environmental monitoring and emergency response. His work bridges the gap between cutting-edge autonomous technology and real-world marine conservation challenges. Ferreira’s most impactful contribution is the first-ever near-real-time, fine-scale (<10 m) tracking of the ocean sunfish (*Mola mola*), published in 2016. This study, which has garnered 31 citations, used satellite tags off southern Portugal to reveal previously invisible movement patterns, revolutionising our understanding of this enigmatic species’ behaviour in space and time.
