About
Elias Mueggler is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of computer vision, robotics, and neuromorphic sensing, whose work has fundamentally advanced how autonomous systems perceive and navigate their environments. He is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking contributions to event-based vision, particularly leveraging Dynamic Vision Sensors (DVS) to enable ultra-low-latency perception for high-speed robotic maneuvers. His 2014 work on 6-DOF pose tracking for aggressive quadrotor flight (254 citations) demonstrated that onboard sensors could replace costly external motion capture systems, while subsequent papers on feature tracking, lifetime estimation, and continuous-time trajectory estimation established foundational algorithms for the event-based vision community. Mueggler has also made lasting contributions to autonomous aerial-ground robot collaboration, developing systems where aerial scouts guide ground robots through unknown or hazardous terrain — work directly motivated by search-and-rescue applications. His 2015 research on autonomous dense 3D mapping with quadrotors (240 citations) remains a landmark in micro aerial vehicle autonomy. More recently, his introduction of the Replica Dataset (2019, 384 citations) provided the community with an invaluable photorealistic benchmark for indoor scene understanding. Collectively accumulating over 1,600 citations, Mueggler's research portfolio reflects both technical depth and meaningful real-world impact.
