About

A pixel (short for "picture element") is the smallest discrete unit of a digital image or display, representing a single point of color or intensity in a two-dimensional grid. In cameras, each pixel corresponds to a photodetector that measures incoming light, collectively forming a complete image when combined across an array. In robotics and AI, pixels serve as the fundamental building blocks for nearly all visual sensing and processing tasks — from RGB and RGB-D cameras capturing color and depth information, to event cameras that detect per-pixel brightness changes asynchronously, to LiDAR systems generating dense point clouds. Algorithms operating on pixel data enable robots to perform object detection, semantic segmentation, visual odometry, SLAM, and scene understanding. The resolution, dynamic range, and latency characteristics of pixel-level sensing directly determine what a robot can perceive and how quickly it can react. As robotic systems increasingly rely on vision for navigation, manipulation, and interaction, understanding pixels — their acquisition, representation, and computational processing — is foundational to designing effective perception pipelines across virtually every application domain.
