About
Dong Yin is a researcher whose work spans the frontiers of robotics, from the microscopic coordination of robot swarms to the bio-inspired propulsion of underwater vehicles. His primary research areas include relative localization for multi-robot systems and bionic underwater propulsion. In the domain of swarm robotics, Yin has made significant contributions to solving the critical challenge of accurate positioning in GNSS-denied environments. His 2022 survey on robot swarms’ relative localization methods, which has garnered 46 citations, provides a comprehensive framework for enabling collision avoidance and formation keeping in complex, signal-poor settings. Complementing this work, he has developed and implemented an improved SS-TWR TOA positioning method based on UWB, achieving high-precision localization for distributed robotic teams. Yin’s earlier research focused on the dynamics and design of bionic undulating fins, inspired by the median and paired fin (MPF) propulsion mode of fish. Through mechanism design, dynamics modeling, and experimental validation, he demonstrated how these fins can produce vector thrust with minimal disturbance to the flow field—a breakthrough for agile, quiet underwater robots. His 2013 and 2016 papers on this topic, while foundational, have accumulated over 17 citations and laid the groundwork for practical applications in underwater exploration. Yin’s work uniquely bridges theoretical modeling with real-world implementation, making him a notable figure in both swarm intelligence and bio-robotics.
