Dev Niyogi is a leading figure in the study of land-atmosphere interactions, urban meteorology, and hydroclimate extremes. His research bridges the gap between climate dynamics and practical applications, with a particular focus on how land use and aerosols influence weather and climate systems. Among his most cited works is a seminal 2004 study comparing GOCART and MODIS aerosol optical depth across the eastern U.S., which provided critical insights for improving satellite-based aerosol data assimilation—a cornerstone for air quality and climate modeling. Niyogi also spearheaded the Convection, Aerosol, and Synoptic-Effects in the Tropics (CAST) Experiment, a major field campaign in Puerto Rico that unravels how multiscale processes drive tropical convection and precipitation.
