About

David Klenerman is a pioneering biophysical chemist whose work has fundamentally advanced single-molecule microscopy and its applications in biology. His research spans the development of novel imaging surfaces, the engineering of biomimetic microcapsules, and the study of biomolecular condensates. A major contribution is the creation of the RF-127 surface, a simplified, highly passivated imaging platform that achieves up to 100-fold reduction in nonspecific protein binding compared to conventional methods, dramatically improving the sensitivity and quantitative accuracy of single-molecule studies. In parallel, his team has designed deformable, robust core-shell protein microcapsules templated by liquid-liquid phase-separated microdroplets, offering new tools for drug delivery and as extracellular matrix models. With over 18,000 citations across his career, Klenerman’s impact is immense. He is also a co-inventor of the revolutionary Solexa sequencing technology, which enabled high-throughput DNA sequencing and transformed genomics.
