About

B. Khoshnevis is a pioneering roboticist whose work centers on self-reconfigurable modular robots and autonomous in-space assembly systems. His research addresses the fundamental challenge of creating robots that can dynamically change shape and size to complete complex missions, with a particular focus on extraterrestrial applications. Among his most influential contributions is the development of the Compliant-And-Self-Tightening (CAST) docking system, a highly compliant and self-tightening connector that enables precise and fast module joining—a critical innovation for self-reconfigurable robots like the CONRO system. His 2004 paper on self-assembly in space, which has garnered 46 citations, demonstrates how self-reconfigurable robots could make space construction feasible with current technology. Khoshnevis also designed an experimental system using an air-hockey table to simulate weightless and frictionless conditions for in-space assembly, a creative approach that earned 37 citations. With additional influential work on reconnectable joints and docking mechanisms, his research has laid essential groundwork for future autonomous construction in orbit and beyond.
