About

Audrey Hyacinthe Bouyom Boutchouang is a robotics researcher whose work tackles one of the most challenging problems in soft robotics: the forward kinematic modeling of continuum manipulators. Unlike traditional rigid robots, these flexible, snake-like arms bend continuously, making their control mathematically complex. Boutchouang’s research focuses on developing both model-based and learning-based approaches to accurately predict a manipulator’s shape and end-effector position from its actuator inputs. Her 2020 paper on learning-based forward kinematics (14 citations) addresses the critical control module needed for these robots, while her 2021 work on conical-shaped continuum manipulators (11 citations) introduces a novel geometry that reduces the explosion of the learning database—a major bottleneck in data-driven modeling. By comparing and refining these two methodologies, Boutchouang is helping bridge the gap between theoretical modeling and practical control for continuum robots. Her contributions are particularly valuable for applications in minimally invasive surgery, search-and-rescue, and industrial inspection, where flexible manipulators offer unique advantages over their rigid counterparts.
