About
Dr. Zongyao Chen is a pioneering researcher in bio-inspired robotics and intelligent manufacturing, whose work bridges nature’s engineering marvels with cutting-edge technology. His primary research areas include bio-inspired propulsion systems, energy-efficient swimming robots, and intelligent welding automation. Chen’s most significant contributions stem from his deep study of the whirligig beetle—one of nature’s most energy-efficient swimmers—which he has translated into novel robotic propulsion mechanisms. His landmark 2015 paper, “Energy-Efficient Surface Propulsion Inspired by Whirligig Beetles” (35 citations), demonstrates how beetle-inspired flexible propellers can dramatically improve surface-swimming efficiency, offering a sustainable blueprint for autonomous aquatic vehicles. This work, alongside his development of a bio-inspired swimming robot at the University of Tennessee, has laid the groundwork for a new class of low-power marine robots. More recently, Chen has expanded into intelligent welding manufacturing, introducing the REI-TPA model (2024) that uses reversed electrode images to precisely monitor welding torch position and posture—a breakthrough for robotic welding control and offline programming. With his unique ability to extract biological principles and apply them to real-world engineering challenges, Chen continues to inspire both roboticists and manufacturing engineers seeking energy-efficient, intelligent solutions.
