About

Ziyi He is a rising leader in the emerging field of bioinspired micro/nanorobotics, with a focus on opto-hydrodynamic manipulation and soft matter engineering. Her research uniquely bridges photonics and microbiology to create intelligent, non-invasive tools for biomedical applications. He’s most notable contribution is the development of the “Wake-Riding Effect-Inspired Opto-Hydrodynamic Diatombot,” a biohybrid microrobot that uses natural diatom shells and light-driven fluid flows to trap and remove nano-biothreats—including viruses and pathogenic bacteria—directly from cell cultures. This work, published in 2023 and garnering 32 citations, offers a groundbreaking, non-invasive solution for contamination control in biomanufacturing and cell-based analysis. Building on this, her 2024 paper on “Photonic nanojet-regulated soft microalga-robot” (23 citations) introduces a deformable, navigable microalga-based robot that can alter its shape and trajectory under optical control, addressing a key challenge in soft microrobotics. Through these innovations, He is pioneering a new class of light-responsive, bio-syncretic robots that promise to revolutionize targeted drug delivery, environmental remediation, and cellular surgery.
