Dengyun Lu is a rising leader in the field of micro- and nanorobotics, with a focus on bio-inspired actuation and biomedical applications. His research creatively harnesses physical phenomena—such as the wake-riding effect and light-induced Marangoni flow—to design intelligent microswarms and robotic systems for tackling critical challenges in healthcare and biotechnology. In his highly cited 2023 work, Lu introduced an opto-hydrodynamic “diatombot” inspired by the wake-riding behavior of dolphins, achieving non-invasive trapping and removal of nano-biothreats like viruses and mycoplasmas from cell cultures—a breakthrough for contamination-free bio-analysis and biomanufacturing. His 2022 paper on light-induced cold Marangoni flow demonstrated how to actuate microswarms with universal and biomimetic intelligence, enabling collective drug delivery with unprecedented control.
