About

Ursula Keller is a pioneering force in ultrafast laser physics and attosecond science. Her key research areas include the development of high-power femtosecond lasers, mode-locking techniques, and the generation of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses for probing electron dynamics in real time. Keller is best known for inventing the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM), a breakthrough that revolutionized the stability and reliability of ultrafast lasers, enabling their widespread use in both fundamental research and industrial applications. Her work on high-harmonic generation and attosecond metrology has opened new frontiers in understanding light–matter interactions at the fastest timescales ever measured. With over 30,000 citations and numerous prestigious awards—including the 2023 IEEE Edison Medal and the 2020 King Faisal Prize—Keller’s impact is immense.
