Lim Ser Yong is a pioneering researcher in mobile robotics and autonomous navigation, best known for developing innovative solutions to the longstanding challenge of local minima in potential-field-based navigation. His landmark 2002 paper, "Virtual obstacle concept for local-minimum-recovery in potential-field based navigation," with 99 citations, introduced a real-time algorithm that enables cylindrical mobile robots to navigate unknown or unstructured environments by dynamically generating virtual obstacles to escape dead zones.
