About

Hossein Nejatbakhsh Esfahani is a control systems researcher whose work focuses on the critical challenge of autonomous underwater vehicle-manipulator systems (UVMS). His research integrates robust control theory with intelligent algorithms to address the complex hydrodynamic disturbances and model uncertainties inherent in underwater robotics. Esfahani’s major contributions include the development of a robust Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach enhanced with a fuzzy compensator for precise trajectory tracking in UVMS, which has garnered 13 citations. He has also pioneered an optimal sliding mode controller (SMC) based on an immune-wavelet algorithm, demonstrating how bio-inspired computing can optimize surface parameters and boundary layer thickness for underwater manipulators. Further advancing the field, he designed a sliding mode-PID fuzzy controller with a novel reaching mode to improve robustness against hydrodynamic disturbances. His most recent work (2024) introduces a learning-based safety-critical MPC using stochastic Control Barrier Functions, addressing safety concerns and model uncertainties in real-time control. With a total of 29 citations across his most-cited papers, Esfahani’s research is steadily building a foundation for more reliable, adaptive, and safe autonomous underwater operations.
