About

Dr. Haixun Sun is pioneering the development of next-generation, eco-friendly smart materials, with a primary focus on bio-inspired actuators and green nanotechnology. Their most notable contribution to date is the creation of intrinsically self-driven humidity actuators derived from silk nanofibers. In a landmark 2024 study, Sun introduced a novel method to exfoliate natural silk using a green deep eutectic solvent (DES), producing silk nanofibers with exceptional properties. This work, already garnering 5 citations shortly after publication, demonstrates a critical advance in sustainable materials science by replacing harsh chemical processes with an environmentally benign alternative. The resulting actuators, capable of responding to humidity without external power, hold transformative potential for soft robotics, smart textiles, and biomedical devices. Sun’s research elegantly bridges the gap between natural resource utilization and high-performance flexible electronics, establishing a new paradigm for green smart devices. By harnessing the intrinsic properties of silk, Dr. Sun is not only advancing fundamental materials science but also paving the way for a more sustainable future in intelligent systems.
