E. Cheung is a pioneering robotics researcher whose career has been defined by a sustained focus on sensor-based motion planning, collision avoidance, and the development of "sensitive skin" technologies for robot arm manipulators. Working primarily from the late 1980s through the mid-2000s, Cheung made foundational contributions to enabling robots to operate safely in uncertain, unstructured environments — a challenge of enduring importance in both industrial automation and space robotics.
