About
David Barnes is a robotics researcher whose career spans four decades of pioneering work in industrial automation, multi-robot coordination, and planetary exploration systems. Beginning in the early 1980s, Barnes made foundational contributions to robotic error recovery, exploring how intelligent systems could detect and automatically correct faults during industrial operations — work that earned him 37 citations for his 1983 landmark paper on knowledge-based error recovery. Through the 1990s, his focus shifted toward the complex challenge of cooperative mobile robotics, where he developed behaviour-synthesis architectures enabling multiple autonomous robots to communicate and collaborate on tasks too sophisticated for single devices, accumulating citations across several influential papers in this domain. His research matured into sophisticated locomotion studies, including a novel gait generation approach for hexapodal robots navigating uneven terrain. Later in his career, Barnes contributed to planetary robotics, participating in the EU FP7-SPACE PRoVisG and PRoViScout projects, developing vision-processing and autonomous navigation technologies for future space exploration missions. With a body of work totalling over 140 citations, Barnes represents a sustained and evolving voice in robotics research, consistently pushing the boundaries of machine autonomy across both terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments.
