About
Chuqi Huang is a leading researcher at the intersection of soft robotics, bioinspired materials, and intelligent actuation systems. Their work focuses on developing next-generation robotic components that mimic biological systems, particularly through the integration of artificial muscles and electronic skins. Huang’s most significant contribution is the development of digital light processing (DLP) of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) for self-sensing artificial muscles, a breakthrough published in 2021 that has garnered 256 citations. This work demonstrated actuators capable of reversible grasping, untethered crawling, and weightlifting, while also introducing an intrinsic self-sensing system using thermally induced optical transitions. Building on this, Huang pioneered skin-inspired sensory robots for electronic implants (146 citations), which seamlessly integrate multifunctional sensing with on-demand actuation, drawing inspiration from vertebrate animals. Their more recent work on self-propelled morphing matter for small-scale swimming soft robots explores bioinspired locomotion mechanisms for untethered aquatic robots. Huang’s research has profound implications for soft robotics, biomedical implants, and autonomous systems, establishing them as a key innovator in creating robots that are not only more adaptive and efficient but also capable of self-monitoring and responding to their environments.
