About

Chenghai Li is a leading figure in the emerging field of biohybrid soft robotics and smart materials, where he pioneers the integration of living organisms with synthetic systems to create unprecedented functionalities. His major contributions center on developing highly robust, soft mechanoluminescent composites—materials that emit light in response to mechanical stress—for applications in optical signaling, illumination, and ultrasensitive sensing. His 2022 paper on biohybrid mechanoluminescence (91 citations) and his 2023 work on ultrasensitive living composites (49 citations) have set new benchmarks for merging biological mechanosensing with synthetic materials. Li has also advanced the design of dexterous artificial motor units using liquid crystal elastomers (69 citations) and pioneered 3D printing of electrically responsive PVC gel actuators (59 citations), enabling novel soft robots and machines. His earlier work on foldable dielectric elastomer actuators (58 citations) laid groundwork for mobile soft robots. With a portfolio of highly cited papers and a focus on scalable fabrication, Li is shaping the future of adaptive, intelligent soft systems that bridge the gap between biological and synthetic capabilities.
