About

Chao Shang is pioneering the next generation of electronic skin (e-skin) by drawing inspiration from human biology. His core research focuses on biomimetic tactile sensing, stress field perception, and touchless interfaces—technologies that could revolutionize robotic haptics and human-machine interaction. In his highly cited 2023 work (50 citations), Shang introduced a multi-parameter e-skin that mimics the layered structure and distributed mechanoreceptors of human skin, enabling robots to perceive complex stress fields with unprecedented accuracy. This breakthrough addresses a fundamental challenge in robotics: replicating the nuanced sense of touch. His earlier 2021 study (13 citations) developed a touchless sensing interface using a magneto-piezoresistive effect in magnetic microstructures, a timely innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic that allows proximity detection without physical contact.
