About

Aya Hussein is a leading researcher in human-swarm interaction, focusing on the critical challenge of enabling effective collaboration between humans and autonomous robot swarms. Her work addresses the fundamental question of how humans can trust and control large, decentralized robotic systems. In her highly cited 2020 paper (37 citations), she established the distinct roles of automation reliability and transparency in trust calibration, providing key principles for designing human-swarm interfaces that prevent over- or under-reliance. Hussein also pioneered the concept of a "Swarm Metaverse" using digital twins to achieve multi-level human autonomy over swarm members, a novel approach for dynamic mission adaptation. Her comprehensive 2018 survey on bi-directional communication in human-swarm teaming remains a foundational reference for the field. More recently, she has explored machine education techniques to guide swarm decision-making, treating the swarm as a learner that can be taught optimal strategies for best-of-n problems. Through her research, Hussein is shaping the future of human-swarm teaming for applications ranging from search-and-rescue to cyber defence.
