About

Ali Akbar Sarbanha is a leading researcher in the hydrodynamics of multiphase flows, with a specialized focus on the behavior of bubbling fluidized beds under marine conditions. His work is critical to advancing the design of offshore and shipboard chemical reactors. Sarbanha’s major contributions center on understanding and mitigating the destabilizing effects of sea-induced roll motions on fluidized bed performance. He pioneered the use of a hexapod robot as a sea state simulator to replicate realistic marine instabilities in a controlled laboratory setting. His highly cited 2023 paper (10 citations) established the foundational dynamics of bubbles and particles under these conditions. He then developed geometric strategies for internal bed components to improve resilience against gas maldistribution, a breakthrough detailed in his 2024 work (6 citations). Most recently, in 2025, he introduced a precision mist injection strategy to stabilize bubbling and homogenize hydrodynamics under significant roll motions. By combining digital image analysis and particle image velocimetry, Sarbanha provides robust, data-driven solutions that are paving the way for safer and more efficient marinized chemical reactors.
