About

Yun Tan is a rising materials scientist whose research focuses on the development of advanced conducting polymer hydrogels for soft robotics and wearable sensing applications. Their most significant contribution to date is the design of fatigue-resistant conducting polymer hydrogels that serve as highly durable strain sensors for underwater robotics. Working alongside Ji Liu and Baoyang Lu, Tan helped pioneer a combined freeze-casting and salting-out fabrication strategy that imparts anisotropic structures and mechanics to these hydrogels—overcoming a longstanding trade-off between mechanical robustness and electrical performance. This work, published in *Advanced Functional Materials* in 2023, has already garnered over 260 combined citations, reflecting its immediate impact on the fields of soft actuators, human-machine interfaces, and bioinspired electronics. By enabling reliable sensing in challenging aquatic environments, Tan’s research addresses critical needs in underwater exploration and autonomous systems. Their achievements mark them as a key contributor to next-generation soft electronic materials, with work that bridges fundamental polymer science and practical engineering challenges.
