About

Xiaorong Dou is a rising leader in the field of soft materials and dielectric elastomers, pioneering molecular-level strategies to overcome fundamental performance limits in electroactive polymers. Their research centers on the molecular engineering of polymer networks to achieve unprecedented electroactive deformation and energy storage capabilities. Dou’s most-cited work introduces a dielectric elastomer network with large side groups that enables large electroactive deformation without prestretch—a critical breakthrough for soft robotic grippers, achieving deformations previously unattainable in unstretched elastomers (39 citations, 2024). This innovation directly addresses the long-standing trade-off between compliance and actuation strain.
