About
Xiaokong Liu is a leading researcher at the forefront of soft robotics and adaptive materials, specializing in bioinspired actuators and smart organic crystals. Their major contributions lie in pioneering hybrid materials that respond to environmental stimuli—particularly temperature and humidity—to produce programmable mechanical motion. Liu’s landmark 2023 work on bioinspired soft robots using organic polymer-crystal hybrids (136 citations) demonstrated unprecedented versatility in creating lightweight, dynamic actuators. A 2022 study on hybrid elastic organic crystals that respond to aerial humidity (101 citations) broke new ground by achieving, for the first time, humidity-driven mechanical deformation in organic crystals, enabling applications from soft robotic grippers to waveguides. More recently, Liu has advanced sustainability with closed-loop recyclable liquid crystal networks that can be programmed and reconfigured at room temperature (2024), eliminating the need for heat-assisted processing. This work promises fully renewable, reprocessable materials for intelligent robots. With over 270 citations across their most influential papers, Liu’s research is shaping the next generation of environmentally responsive, recyclable soft robots and smart materials.
